SPE KNUST was represented at the 2026 SPE Africa Regional Student Paper Contest, held alongside the SPE Africa Student Congress at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, from 22–24 July 2026, by Maame Afua Nhyira Quaicoe, a third-year Petroleum Engineering student at KNUST, intern at the university's Net-Zero Carbon Emission Lab, and Acting President of the Petroleum Engineering Students' Association (PESA).

Her paper, "TEN-G Index: Optimising Declining Deepwater Fields Using a Quantitative Oil-to-Gas Transition Framework," addressed how to determine when a maturing deepwater field should shift from oil-biased production to gas-capture operations. It introduced the TEN-G Index, a physics-based transition model combining normalized production signals — gas-oil ratio, reservoir pressure ratio, water cut, and a carbon-penalty term — into a single, statistically calibrated indicator, built and validated on multiple years of production, pricing, and emissions data from a deepwater FPSO field in the Gulf of Guinea.

Quaicoe placed third at the regional contest. The contest was won by Cherish Chukwu of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, who advances to represent the region at the 2026 SPE International Student Paper Contest at ATCE in Houston.

SPE KNUST congratulates Maame Afua Nhyira Quaicoe on this achievement, representing the chapter at one of SPE's most competitive individual research contests.
